We very often encounter doubts and false rumors regarding the care of our genitals. Should I use soap on my vulva or not? What do I do to not alter my pH? Are vaginal douches good? So let's stop talking and let's solve them.
Let's start by clarifying something that we often confuse: when we talk about “intimate area” we are referring to our external genitalia, the vulva, and our vagina, and we must take care of both in a very different way.
On the one hand, our vulva acts as a barrier that protects us from the outside and is made up of unique microorganisms different from those in the rest of the body. Taking care of ourselves must include protecting this very sensitive skin, to avoid altering its pH and thus possible infections.
As for our vagina, “the less, the better,” but we'll talk about that later.
VAGINAL PH WHAT IS IT?
Vaginal pH is the degree of acidity or alkalinity of the vagina. This is acidic compared to that of the rest of the body and that is why it protects us against infections, keeps our vagina properly lubricated and prevents the formation of bad odors.
HABITS TO KEEP YOUR INTIMATE AREA CLEAN AND HEALTHY
First of all we have to talk about our underwear and specifically cotton. And if there is a material that allows the skin to breathe and moisture does not accumulate in our genital area, it is undoubtedly cotton. So, although lace and synthetic fabrics look divine, on a daily basis we recommend wearing underwear made of 100% cotton.
Another trick is to try sleeping without underwear or in loose, comfortable pajamas that don't constrict you. Because in the end, although cotton breathes more than any other fabric, it still retains some moisture, which can cause yeast or bacteria to grow.
As you can see, humidity is our great enemy. Creates the perfect environment for the proliferation of vaginal yeast and infections. Our advice is that you try not to spend too much time in a wet bikini or swimsuit and do not wear pants that are too tight in the genital area.
SOAP? THE BIG DOUBT
The pH of our genital area is acidic, unlike the rest of the body which has a neutral pH. This is the main reason why, in general, it is not recommended to use soap to wash the intimate area, much less the same one you use on the rest of the body.
Even specific soaps will never be exactly the same acidic as the genital pH. Therefore, our advice is to wash the intimate area correctly with only warm water.
You will also be very familiar with intimate hygiene wipes against odor, to keep you “fresh” and supposedly cleaner. However, the same thing happens with soaps, their pH is not the same as that of your vulva. In addition, they can cause excess humidity in the area, not to mention how unecological it is on an environmental level.
Vaginal douching is unnecessary
We emphasize again that the vagina and the vulva are not the same. Although it is important to clean our vulva daily, vaginal washing can be dangerous, since our vagina does not need cleaning (unless prescribed by a doctor). So to keep your pH balanced it is best to…do nothing! And avoid introducing chemicals or substances that could alter our microbiota or vaginal flora.
And after all this information, which we hope has helped you identify what you do right and wrong in your hygiene habits, at Atlantia we want to present you our new product for vaginal care: REGILUB.
It is a fragrance-free cream-gel intended to relieve vaginal dryness, composed of organically grown aloe vera and 100% pure Rosehip oil, with high regenerative capacity.
Its application is both internal and external and its main function is to hydrate and care for the vaginal mucosa, creating a protective film, as well as increasing its elasticity. Of course, its pH is physiologically compatible with that of the intimate area.
We recommend that you apply it to the vulva and vaginal area with your fingertips for continued hydration.
You know how much we want you to try it so you can see its benefits, since it has been created with a lot of love and care to take care of our intimate area in the best possible way.
