FAQ (Frequently asked questions)

Atlantia Aloe Vera

Is it possible for a product to be 100% Aloe vera?

Keeping 100% pure Aloe vera in a jar or pot is impossible, since due to its natural condition, it would dry out or oxidize within 24 hours and lose some of its properties. However, at Atlantia we add to the Canarian pure Aloe vera juice a number of components required to both form the gel as well as for its preservation.

Some ingredients perfectly reflected on the labeling or product INCI: 95% of Aloe barbadensis leaf juice and 5% of glycerin, caprylyl glycol, carbomer, sodium hydroxide, citric acid, ascorbic acid, sodium metabisulfite.

How do we make our products with pure Aloe vera?

To ensure that our products have the highest quality, we take care of the whole process from the earliest stages:

  • Aloe vera eco grown in the Canary Islands: one hundred percent organic, it’s not transgenic and no synthetic fertilizers, pesticides nor fungicides have been used in the cultivation process.
  • Harvesting of the fresh leaves from the freshly cut plant.
  • Pulp, filtration and cold settled: Extraction of the clear, jellylike pulp; removal of impurities and preserved in refrigerated stainless steel tanks to ensure all its properties maintain.
  • Product development: Under no circumstances is concentrated or powdered Aloe used to make the products, since the processes to which the gel is subjected to for obtaining these concentrates and lyophilisation, eliminate much of the active ingredients naturally present in the plant.
  • Packaged to maintain quality: Atlantia containers have been designed specially so that the product retains all its properties. Such is the case with the Atlantia Pure Aloe Vera Gel and Atlantia Men's Line products, whose containers are air free. So the product is perfectly preserved for much longer.

Canarian Aloe Vera

Why is Aloe Vera from the Canary Islands (Spain) so popular?

The Canary Islands meet a number of unique conditions to cultivate a high quality Aloe vera: plenty of sunlight and a warm, dry, breezy environment. This favourable climate, along with the volcanic soil of the Islands, very porous and with lots of minerals, makes the archipelago one of the best sites for growing Aloe vera.

There are over 400 varieties of aloe, however, the Aloe Barbadensis Miller (Aloe vera, true aloe), also known as Sabila or Barbados Aloe, is grown in the Canary Islands and used for the production of our pure Aloe vera juice.

Is Atlantia Aloe vera cultivated in the Canaries?

Yes. Aloe vera requires plenty of sunlight, a warm, dry and breezy environment. The climate of the southern part of the Canary Islands fulfills all these requirements: long hours of sunshine throughout the year, stable temperatures, very little rainfall and the constant trade winds.

Conditions which we benefit from at Atlantia through the eco cultivation of Aloe vera, allowing the plant to fully develop its potential. Thus, scientific studies have highlighted that aloe grown in the Canaries has a higher concentration of active components than grown in other regions.

What is currently happening with the "Canarian branding" of Aloe vera?

For some years now, Canarian entrepeneurs dedicated to the production of Aloe vera produced in the archipelago, have denounced the (unscrupulous) use of the "Canarian branding" to obtain higher revenues in their products.

It's very common to see numerous commercial ''Canarian'' Aloe vera creams. A common practice that leads to deception and lies, by checking how the label shows a particular discrepancy between the "Canary Islands" branding and the actual place where the product was imported from. "Pirates" or counterfeiters take advantage of this to use Aloe of a different origin to Canarian, and then falsify labeling information.

The industry also denounces the damage done to the "Canarian branding" due to the fact that a visitor buys a product that is thought to be 100% made in the Archipelago, and when used, discover its resemblance to a conventional cream. There are also many tourists who choose to return to their countries with Canarian Aloe Vera products.

Ecological Certification

Do Atlantia products have some kind of ecological certification?

Ecological Farming Certification: The message is that we use 100% ecologically farmed Aloe vera for our product, as it says on the label "Comes from ecological plantations of the Canary Islands."

In fact, the organisation that certifies ecological farming in the Canaries is the CRAE. This body certifies the crop, but not products processed from these crops.

Is there a universal Ecological Farming Certification?

Certification seals are really a business. For there are countless seals in the market for ecological products; each one with its requirements, different in each country and usually not known by the consumer. In fact, in France there is the so-called "Ecocert" which is the most recognised, but England has the "Soil Association". However, in Germany they are inclined to Öko certificates. In Italy there are many seals due to their lack of agreement between various standards.

The aim is to harmonise the various certifications and labels in order to create an internationally recognised seal for organic and natural cosmetics. Initially it will add to the certifications of the five founding members, these being the only ones able to apply for the new seal. Joint certification is estimated to appear at the end of 2014, but at present it still doesn't exist.
